Our view of the service
St Vincents House is a care home providing personal care and nursing care for up to 92 older people who may be living with dementia. During our inspection there were 84 people using the service. The assessment was carried out by 1 assessor. During the assessment we spoke with the deputy manager, and management team, 8 people or their relatives, and 11 care staff for their feedback about the service. We also contacted 12 healthcare professionals for their views. The registered manager was on leave during the inspection.
We looked at 8 quality statements and found that people received a safe service, which was provided by competent, professional, and well-trained staff. Staff were recruited appropriately, and people were supported, and enabled to take acceptable risks in a proactive, encouraging, way. This enhanced their quality of life, and reduced social isolation. Staff supported people by working well as a team, and providing joined up, integrated care. This included involving external healthcare professionals, as appropriate. The provider’s approach to care was person centred, and promoted, maintained, and enhanced people’s independence, by giving them choices regarding the service they received. The provider gained people’s consent to treatment, and they were encouraged, and supported to maintain healthy diets. The support provided was monitored to improve outcomes for people. People, and their relatives said the service was professionally managed, and the staff employed, treated people with kindness, compassion, and as individuals, making sure they received equitable service experiences. The service was well led, with good governance, and effective monitoring systems. At the last assessment, the service was rated overall good with good in safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led. At this assessment, the rating has remained overall good, with good in safe, caring, responsive, and well led.
People's experience of this service
People were enabled to have maximum choice and control of their lives, and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests; the policies and systems in the service supported this practice. People and their relatives said the care home was well managed with a registered manager and management team, who were positive, contactable, and responsive to any concerns or queries they had, and acted on them. They said, staff were respectful, friendly, and provided good care, and support. They were well-trained, skilled, and provided a safe service, which enabled people to experience positive outcomes regarding their care and support. The support provided, meant people were able to live safely, and were protected from risk of abuse or harm. The registered manager, and staff team were responsive to people’s changing needs, concerns, and provided them and their relatives with support to understand safeguarding. People were aware of how to raise concerns if they felt unsafe. People received support that was prompt, responsive, appropriate, and provided by staff who worked well together as a team. People and their relatives were supported to have choice and control over the way staff provided care, and support. They were also supported to maintain social, and family contacts, and pursue interests, and hobbies to reduce the risk of social isolation. People were encouraged and supported, by staff to do as much as they could for themselves to maintain and improve their independence.
