Safeguarding
The service worked with people and healthcare partners to understand what being safe meant to them and the best way to achieve that. They concentrated on improving people’s lives while protecting their right to live in safety, free from bullying, harassment, abuse, discrimination, avoidable harm and neglect. The service shared concerns quickly and appropriately.People told us they felt safe living at the service. A person told us, “I am safe. If you want something doing, you only have to ask. There are always carers here to help me.” Safeguarding procedures were in place and staff knew how to report concerns. The registered manager understood their responsibilities to make referrals to the local authority as required. A relative said, “My loved one is safe, I feel really relaxed about it. They feel safe too at Castle Farm.” The registered manager had made all statutory notifications to CQC as required by law. Statutory notifications are submitted by services to inform CQC of events which occur within it. The registered manager told us they were not supporting anyone who required consideration through DoLS procedures, however, they understood how to make the referrals if needed.
Involving people to manage risks
The service worked with people to understand and manage risks by thinking holistically. They provided care to meet people’s needs that was safe, supportive and enabled people to do the things that mattered to them.People were involved in managing risks within their daily lives. Risks to people’s health and wellbeing had been identified, assessed and reduced. Staff understood people’s risks and had access to the most up to date assessments on the electronic care planning system. A relative said, “Staff make sure they are aware of what my loved one needs, this includes seeking medical support when needed. Their general health and wellbeing have improved so much since living there. They meet my loved ones needs, and our need too.” Risks to people and staff from the environment had been considered and risk assessments ensured all areas of the home were as safe as they could be.

Safe and effective staffing
The service made sure there were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff, who received effective support, supervision and development. They worked together well to provide safe care that met people’s individual needs.People told us there were enough staff on duty and they were there when they needed them. Staff told us they felt supported by the registered manager and provider, many of them having long service. We received positive feedback about the registered manager and their support for staff. A member of staff said, “The registered manager is very supportive, I couldn’t do my job without them.” Staff were recruited safely, and recruitment records reflected this. Procedures were in place to ensure the required checks were carried out on staff before they commenced their employment. This included enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks for adults. DBS checks provide information including details about convictions and cautions held on the police national computer. The information helps employers make safer recruitment decisions. Learning and development was in place to ensure staff were properly inducted into the service and their knowledge developed. The registered manager had oversight of training within the service. Staff were complimentary about their colleagues, one staff member told us, “It's a good team altogether really, very supportive we would all help anyone out when we need to.”
