Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

People, relatives and health professionals were positive about the kindness and care shown to them by staff. One person told us, “Staff comfort me when I am upset.” A relative told us, “I love the care here, my [relative] is well looked after.” Another relative told us, “All the staff, including kitchen, laundry and cleaners are all kind and attentive to residents.” Results from a recent internal residents' survey found people felt they were well supported by staff.

Training records showed staff received training in dignity and person-centred care. Staff demonstrated empathy when speaking about people and in a positive way.

The provider told us regular meetings were held to gather feedback from people and their relatives, so people felt listened to. We saw evidence of this from meeting minutes. They also had daily meetings with members of the staff team to discuss various aspects of the home.

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

We did not look at Treating people as individuals during this assessment. The score for this quality statement is based on the previous rating for Caring.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

People told us they were encouraged to maintain independence and were given choice. A person told us, “I feel supported and given choices.” Another person told us, “I have choices with meals and where I want to eat my meals.”

We saw people making choices, for example about when and where they ate. Staff regularly checked with people to ensure they were comfortable and did not need any support. One person told us, “I get washed and dressed at a time of day that suits me.” Interactions we observed between people and staff were positive. It was clear people and staff had good relationships.

People were not always involved in their care planning. The provider had recently implemented a new system to ensure that people would be involved in their care planning going forward.
