Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

Staff at the service were observed promoting peoples’ independence and assisting them to access the community and activities that were important to them. This included the provider’s Magic Moments Initiative; where people are asked about something special they would like to do, and staff at the service would accommodate this. For example, one person wanted to be a publican. The management contacted the local pub and staff supported him to be a publican for the afternoon.

People were observed being offered choices at mealtimes, and they could choose when, where and how they wanted to dine and people told us “the food is excellent.” Where people found there was nothing appealing to them on the menu, they were offered alternatives. Relatives told us, “The meals are always nutritious, hot and the right size” and, “the (meal) regime is not rigid.”
