Our view of the service

Date of Assessment: 30th October 2024 – 20th December 2024. St Jude’s House is a residential care home providing support for up to 12 adults living with mental health conditions. At the time of the assessment, there were 11 people using the service. At our last inspection, the service was rated requires improvement. At this assessment the service is rated as good.

The service had enough staff employed to keep people safe. However, there was only 1 member of staff on duty in the home throughout the night which posed a risk. The provider was in breach of the legal regulations relating to safe staffing. We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to our concerns.

We found the décor of the service was tired, and in need of redecorating, however it was clean and well maintained. People had care plans in place, however, we found the level of personal care required in some plans were not clear. People and their relatives had access to view care plans and were involved of the planning and reviewing of these plans. The management of medicines was supported by a digital system, which helped reduce the risk of error. People were involved in their meal planning and preparation and had enough food and drink to stay healthy. Accidents and incidents were documented as soon as possible after occurrence. The provider had systems in place to ensure staff safe recruitment. However, we found areas that required improvement including, gathering people’s full employment histories, and staff reporting their right to work in the UK. Staff had access to training and supervision and told us they were happy with the support they received in relation to this. Staff respected people’s privacy and treated them with kindness and respect, and people had opportunity to give feedback on the care they received in an annual review. People had the opportunity to give feedback on the care they received in an annual review.

People's experience of this service

People gave positive feedback on the care they received, and said they were happy living at St Jude’s House. They reported to feeling cared for and being treated with respect. At this assessment, we observed people being treated with dignity and respect by staff. We saw people appeared comfortable approaching management and staff and having discussions with them throughout the day.

A relative told us ‘It is a great placement; they take the good days and the bad days. They give [person] enough freedom and do not judge. I have always been happy with their care.”

Relatives were able to access people’s daily care records through a digital system. This ensured relatives were always updated on people’s care and well-being.

While people expressed general satisfaction with their care and treatment, our assessment found elements of care which did not meet the standard, such as staffing levels during the night not being sufficient to keep people safe from the risk of harm in the event of an emergency.
