During an assessment under our new approach

Date of assessment 18-26 February 2025. Thornton Lodge Surgery is a GP practice in Huddersfield HD1 3SB. The provider is registered with the Care Quality Commission to deliver the Regulated Activities of, Maternity and Midwifery services, Family Planning, Treatment of disease, disorder or injury, Surgical procedures, and Diagnostic and screening procedures. The practice is located in the West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board and provides personal medical services to 2,972 patients. Information published by the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities, rates the level of deprivation within the practice population as 2 on a scale of 1 to 10. The lower the decile, the more deprived it is relative to others. The National General Practice Profiles state that the ethnic make-up of the practice area is 48.3% Asian, 38.6% White, 5.1%, Black, 3.8% Mixed and 4.2% Other. The assessment considered the demographics of people using the service, the context the service worked within, and how this impacted service delivery.

We identified a breach of Regulation 12(1) Health and Social Care Act (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014 Safe care and treatment for the key questions of safe and effective, and have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment. This breach related to the failure of the provider to have full vaccination status of staff in line with guidance, that all staff had not received Disclosure and Barring Service checks appropriate to their role, a backlog in the processing of incoming medical records, and a failure to deliver appropriate care support for asthma patients.

We found that the provider provided a caring service where patients were treated with kindness and compassion. They treated patients equally and without discrimination. The provider was responsive to patient’s individual care needs, and was well-led.
