Effective – this means we looked for evidence that people’s care, treatment and support achieved good outcomes and promoted a good quality of life, based on best available evidence. This was the first inspection for this service. This key question has been rated good. This meant people’s outcomes were consistently good, and people’s feedback confirmed this.

Assessing needs

The service made sure people’s care and treatment was effective by assessing and reviewing their health, care, wellbeing and communication needs with them. The care records detailed people’s needs but, at times, needed to include more information about how people were impacted by their mental health needs and how staff could support them. The registered manager immediately made improvements to the records. A relative said, “The staff really understand [person’s name] and know how to work with them. It is great to see how [person’s name] has improved since they came here.”

Delivering evidence-based care and treatment

The staff planned and delivered people’s care and treatment with them, including what was important and mattered to them. They did this in line with legislation and current evidence-based good practice and standards. The registered manager had worked with people to review how best to meet their nutritional needs. Following a consultation with them and the provider it was agreed the catering staff from the adjacent sister home would provide the main meals. We observed people received a range of wholesome food and they could request alternatives when they wanted. People told us the new menus were much better and the food was really “beautiful” and “delicious.”

How staff, teams and services work together

The provider worked well across teams and services to support people. They made sure people only needed to tell their story once by sharing their assessment of needs when people moved between different services. Staff worked closely with other agencies and professionals such as district nurses, McMillan nurses and the local GP to ensure people received appropriate support. A professional said, “We have a good working relationship with the staff and they always contact us when needed.”

Supporting people to live healthier lives

Staff supported people to manage their health and wellbeing to maximise their independence, choice and control. They supported people to live healthier lives and where possible, reduce their future needs for care and support. Relatives and professionals reported individuals had experienced positive outcomes because of the service. A relative said, “[Person’s name] and we have had nothing but good experiences. It is a relaxed and easy place to be and nothing we ask for is an issue.”

Monitoring and improving outcomes

Staff routinely monitored people’s care and treatment to continuously improve it. They ensured that outcomes were positive and consistent, and that they met both clinical expectations and the expectations of people themselves.

Staff told people about their rights around consent and respected these when delivering person-centred care and treatment. Staff understood the requirements of the Mental Capacity Act and associated codes of practice. They completed capacity assessments and ‘best interests’ decisions. However, these did not always cover all types of decisions or show how staff had explored with people their ability to make an informed choice. The registered manager immediately made improvements to these records. People made their own choices and decisions on a day-to-day basis about what they did, what they ate and how they filled their time.
