Updated 20 January 2025

Date of assessment: 5 to 26 February 2025. Pendleton Court is a care home which provides support for up to 58 people who require either residential, general nursing, or dementia nursing care. The assessment included 2 on site visits, with additional information and evidence reviewed remotely.

The assessment was completed as a result of concerns reported to CQC via our ‘Give feedback on care’ webform. Due to the time which had elapsed since our last inspection, a decision was made to complete an up-to-date assessment to ensure people were safe and receiving good care.

People were protected and kept safe. Staff understood and managed risks. The facilities and equipment met people’s needs, were clean and well-maintained and any risks mitigated. There were enough staff with the right skills, qualifications and experience. Managers made sure staff received training and regular supervision to maintain good care. People had enough to eat and drink to stay healthy. Staff made sure people understood their care and treatment to enable them to give informed consent. Decisions were made in people’s best interests where they did not have capacity. People were treated with kindness and compassion and staff protected their privacy and dignity. The provider had a good learning culture and people could raise concerns. Managers investigated incidents thoroughly. The provider used audits and other monitoring to help drive improvements. However, the management of medicines was inconsistent. This was largely in relation to record keeping as well as the management of topical medicines, such as creams.

People's experience of the service

Updated 20 January 2025

Overall, people and relatives spoke positively about the care and support provided. People told us they were safe and supported by well trained staff who knew them well. One person stated, “I like it here. The staff are great and very helpful. I feel very safe here.” People told us they felt respected by staff who sought their consent. They felt comfortable raising any concerns, and that staff would listen to them and try to make improvements. Most of the people we spoke with could not recall being involved in their care plan. However, each care plan we reviewed contained a range of person-centred information, including likes, dislikes, what was important to the person and how they wanted to be cared for. We noted several examples of individualised care during our site visits, which ensured people’s specific needs were met. One relative told us how staff had quickly identified a hand cream the relative had provided, was causing an adverse reaction and this was swiftly removed. The relative stated, “They [staff] were on it right away, photos taken and good communication. [Relative] is thriving here.” People were supported to engage in a range of activities, which included community based events such as tea dances and visiting the local day centre. A relative told us, “Communication is very good. I often get sent videos of [relative] dancing, which is something they love to do.”
