Our view of the service
Date of assessment: 25 February to 4 March 2025. Coundon Manor Care Home is a nursing home providing accommodation for up to 74 people who require nursing or personal care, some beds being part of the 'Discharge to Assess' (D2A) scheme. The D2A scheme aims to ensure people are moved out of hospital to receive a period of rehabilitation in a community setting prior to assessment of their long-term care needs. At the time of our assessment there were 60 people living in the home. During the assessment we spoke with people who lived at the service, their relatives, staff, the registered manager and representatives from other partner organisations. We looked at care plans, recruitment files and quality assurance records. Coundon Manor Care Home was previously registered under a different provider. This was their first assessment under the new provider. The registered manager and senior management team were proactive and committed to providing high standards of care. They demonstrated where improvements had been achieved and acknowledged further improvements were still required in some areas of the service. Additional checks needed to be created to give the provider assurance they were monitoring the service effectively and continuously identifying when improvements were required. Staff described supportive managers and worked as a team to ensure people received safe, effective and responsive care. Overall, risks to people’s health were assessed and strategies implemented to mitigate those risks and monitor people’s outcomes. People received their prescribed medicines and staff understood how to access emergency, routine and specialist support when it was required. However, risks in the environment had not always been identified and some improvements were needed in infection control practices. We found a breach of the regulations in relation to good governance and have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.
People's experience of this service
Feedback from people and their relatives was generally positive about Coundon Manor Care Home and the care people received. People described staff as being available, responsive and competent in their roles. People were involved in discussions about their care needs and preferences when they first moved to the home. Whilst people and their relatives had not always been involved in formal reviews of care plans, most felt any changes in needs were shared with them. People appeared relaxed and comfortable when interacting with staff and staff supported people in a way that respected their privacy and dignity. During our inspection we observed occasions when staff responded to people in a meaningful way, offering reassurance and comfort. Staff used their knowledge of people to support their wellbeing and promoted choice and independence. People were given information about planned activities so they could choose which ones they wished to engage in. However, some people felt staff were busy and did not always have time to respond to their social needs. Overall, people were happy with the menu and food choices and were encouraged to eat and drink well to maintain their health. People were supported to attend appointments and check ups with other healthcare professionals to support their physical and emotional wellbeing.
