Summerhill is a residential home providing personal care and support to older people, including people who may live with dementia. The service can accommodate up to 29 people, at the time of our visit 27 people were using the service. A registered manager was in post. At our last inspection, we identified breaches of legal regulations for safe care and treatment and good governance and records.
At this inspection improvements had been made, and the provider was no longer in breach of legal regulations. Since the last inspection, the registered manager had introduced improvements to the service, including to records to ensure staff had guidance to meet people’s needs in a safe and person-centred way. Risks to people had been assessed and care plans were in place to help mitigate risks as far as possible. Accidents and incidents were investigated, action taken, and lessons learned. There were sufficient trained staff who worked with other professionals to ensure people's needs were met in a safe way.
Staff spoke very positively about working at the service and the people they cared for. There were sufficient trained staff who worked well with other professionals to ensure people's needs were met. Staff supported people safely and treated them with kindness and compassion. There was a varied programme of activities. People received a varied diet and enjoyed a positive dining experience. People, relatives and staff spoke positively about the service and management.

People and relatives were complimentary about the care provided by staff. They said staff were kind, caring and supportive of people and their families. Their comments included, “I am safe, it is loving care”, “I am fine, I am comfortable, my room overlooks the trees”, and “Life here seems to be very safe, very pampered, staff look after you.” Staff, people and relatives were very positive about the improvements that had been made at the service. There were enough competent staff to meet people’s needs safely. People told us they felt safe, staff knew them well and they felt confident to raise any concerns. A person told us, “It is like a hotel here, I recommend all the staff they are lovely.” People received a varied diet and specialist or modified diets were catered for. People and relative’s comments included,” I enjoy my breakfast, I like Shreddies and hot chocolate”, “There is plenty of food and drink, sometimes there is a glass of wine” and “It is home cooked food, my favourite meals, they cook it.”
People had access to activities and entertainment to support their health and well-being. Their comments included, “There is more than enough going on, the singers come regularly”, “The schools come in, sing and interact it encourages the residents to interact” and “They have had a Shetland pony in here, all sorts of animals.”
People told us they were listened to, they were supported to make choices and were involved in decision making about their care and support. A person commented, “You discuss it together, with staff, they are very helpful.”
