Independence, choice and control
People were always treated with kindness, empathy and compassion. People knew staff well and gave positive feedback about how well they were supported. One said, “The girls are smashing!” Another said, “The staff are lovely and there are plenty of staff. They are all familiar faces. I know who’s on at weekends and nights too.” People experienced good levels of continuity of care because the provider was not heavily reliant on agency staff and had a core group of staff who knew people’s needs and individualities well.
We observed positive, warm and friendly interactions between staff and people on both days of our visit. Staff consistently gave people choices and respected and acted upon those choices. For example, where people chose to sit, how they chose to spend their day and what they wanted to eat and drink. The culture was open and supportive of people’s independence, for instance through when their relatives visited. There were no restrictions. One person said, “I like painting and clay. I have plenty of visitors and they can just turn up, so it’s a nice surprise when they come.”
Policies, systems and processes supported people to have the right to have choice and control.
