Equity in access

Regulations met

The provider told us they had considered disability access in 2011 after purchasing the practice , however these weren't sustainable due to necessity of having to close the practice for 6 weeks. However, the provider had not carried out a disability access audit order to help them understand their obligations under the Equality Act 2010 and to form the basis of a plan of action to enable them to improve accessibility. These are required annually.

Staff described the reasonable adjustments they had made to ensure the practice was accessible. The practice was not wheelchair accessible as there was no ground floor surgery. The provider informed new patients of this. An extra railing had been installed upstairs to the surgery and the practice had made improvements to off street access with an extended threshold.

Staff were clear about the importance of providing emotional support to patients when delivering care.

The practice supported more vulnerable members of society, for example, patients living with dementia or adults and children with a learning disability. Staff had completed training in supporting patients with autism.

The practice displayed its opening hours and provided information on their website and patient information leaflet.

The frequency of appointments was agreed between the dentist and the patient, giving due regard to National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines.

The practice provided telephone numbers for patients needing emergency dental treatment during the working day and when the practice was not open.

At the time of our assessment, patients who needed an urgent appointment were offered one in a timely manner.
